Tax cuts are reductions in municipal, state and federal taxes. They are seen as a way of reducing the tax burden on citizens, but also lowers the amount of revenue generated for the government, which reduces the amount of services it can perform. Tax cuts are often approved by governments when the economy is struggling as a way to increase consumer spending. Usually such cuts are temporary and are designed to be restored after the economy improves. Tax cuts are one of the most common campaign promises in U.S. politics, but most debate focuses on how such cuts should be carried out. Some politicians advocate across-the-board tax cuts that would equally reduce the burden on corporations, the wealthy, the middle class and disadvantaged Americans. Others favor cuts that would have a greater impact on poorer citizens. Other types of recent tax cut proposals have targeted the middle class and small businesses.
