Oprah Winfrey will not succeed Donald Trump as the next president of the United States.
The longtime talk show host laid to rest rumors that she could make a future play for the Oval Office while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter." Winfrey appeared on the podcast episode published this week to promote her new HBO drama, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks."
"I will never run for public office," Winfrey said. "That's a pretty definitive thing."
At one time, Trump said he'd "love to have Oprah" as a vice presidential running mate. The two could win easily, Trump said.
"I like Oprah. I mean, is that supposed to be a bad thing? I don't think so," he told ABC's George Stephanopoulos in a 2015 interview.
Winfrey backed Trump rival Hillary Clinton during last year's presidential election.
In December 2016, Winfrey told financier David Rubenstein she reconsidered whether she had the necessary government experience to lead the country after Trump won the presidency. After all, Trump, a billionaire New York businessman, had never before held public office.
"No, that won't be happening, but I mean, I did used to think, 'Well gee, you had to know so much more than I thought you had to know,'" Winfrey said during the interview for Rubenstein's Bloomberg show.
The comments helped fuel speculation that Winfrey could challenge Trump in 2020, if he chose to run for re-election.
But could she win?
"I don't know. I don't know the answer to that," Winfrey said during the podcast. "But, I'll never have to know the answer to that, because I will never run for public office."
Public musings over future Trump opponents are nothing new. A May poll even found that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stood a chance at becoming the next president.
But as for the 2020 presidential cycle, Winfrey doesn't plant to have any aha moments.
