At Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, students can follow three different tracks to an M.D. The University Program is a traditional four-year curriculum; the College Program is a five-year program that integrates research with more clinical experience; and the Medical Scientist Training Program awards both a medical degree and a Ph.D. in about seven years. Notable alumni of the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine include former U.S. Surgeon Generals Jesse Leonard Steinfeld and David Satcher, and Julie L. Gerberding, the first female director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
