At Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, students can follow three different tracks to an M.D. The University Program is a traditional four-year curriculum; the College Program is a five-year program that integrates research with more clinical experience; and the Medical Scientist Training Program awards both a medical degree and a Ph.D. in about seven years. The medical school curriculum at Case Western emphasizes a combination of medicinal knowledge and public health awareness, taking into account the social and behavioral contexts of illnesses covered in class. Students can give back and get hands-on experience at The Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland or can choose from more than 35 student organizations to get involved in. As the largest biomedical research institution in the state of Ohio, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has been on the forefront of medical research discoveries including the world’s first artificial human chromosome in 1997.

Notable alumni of the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine include former U.S. Surgeon Generals Jesse Leonard Steinfeld and David Satcher, and Julie L. Gerberding, the first female director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
