North Carolina is home to two universities that share a legendary rivalry, particularly in basketball: Duke University and the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. Sports are a big deal at many of the dozens of colleges and universities located throughout North Carolina. Students in North Carolina have a variety of higher education options, including large research universities, midsize colleges and small private liberal arts colleges. Several colleges and universities are publicly funded and have locations in cities including Charlotte, Greenville, Greensboro, Wilmington, Durham, Asheville and the capital, Raleigh.
