Low-calorie diets and longevity
A team of medical researchers has identified several chemical compounds that seem to mimic the effects of a low-calorie diet but without a change in the amount of essential nutrients. As a result, according to the study, it may be possible to design drugs that imitate the effects of calorie restriction. The regimen has increased the life span of almost every species in which it has been tested as well as suppressed many diseases associated with obesity, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
