Why we get tired

Is muscle fatigue all in our minds? According to a South African study that appears in New Scientist, there's evidence that increased levels of a protein called interleukin-6 after exercise play a role in helping us realize it's time to call it quits for the day. In the University of Cape Town study, runners injected with the protein ran markedly slower than runners given a placebo.
