The Red Sox impact
Democratic strategists are hopeful that the ascension of the Boston Red Sox to the World Series will give John Kerry an edge in the "everyday guy" department. The Red Sox have become America's darlings, the underdog team finally on the verge of vindication. Kerry fans also contend that the team members come across as hard-working, down-to-earth guys who will help Kerry and his home state of Massachusetts change their image among some voters as elitist and too liberal. Many Kerry insiders see a World Series victory against the St. Louis Cardinals as a sign Kerry will win. "I hope they win in four," says Kerry strategist Tad Devine, "and that becomes the metaphor for our campaign."

The Doe's Eat Place pact
Seems nobody tells Arkansas Democrats what to do, not even Sen. John Kerry's campaign, which appears to be ceding Bill Clinton's home state to the Republicans. The evidence: Several top Democrats have decided to raise $100,000 of their own to produce and air ads for Kerry's campaign. State Party Chair Ron Oliver announced the plan at a meeting at Little Rock's famed Doe's Eat Place. He said the money would be raised for ads that would feature former Sen. Dale Bumpers, former presidential candidate Wes Clark, and former Clinton official Rodney Slater. In a letter sent out this week explaining the move, the group said:

"It appears, at least for now, that the Kerry campaign does not feel it can afford to spend any meaningful amount of money on Arkansas media for the November election. We Arkansans, however, are not willing to "roll over" and concede the state–nor is the Kerry campaign–and our mission and intent is to do everything within our power to carry Arkansas for John Kerry. Consequently, we have organized a committee to raise as much money as we can, over a short period of time, for Arkansas media, namely radio spots featuring Dale Bumpers, Gen. Wesley Clark, and Rodney Slater. These will be 60-second spots from each urging Arkansans to vote for John Kerry, and setting forth why it is so important to do so. Money permitting, we may also run one or more quarter-page adds in the 100 weekly newspapers throughout the state, probably featuring pictures and endorsements from these three."
