Democrats All Smiles About the Senate

Posted at 9:23 PM ET by Silla Brush

Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid were grinning in their first words this evening, soon after networks called Democratic victories in Ohio and Pennsylvania and then New Jersey. In the upstairs, and second, ballroom the party rented in the Hyatt Regency near Capitol Hill, Schumer said, "It's going to be a long night, but so far so good," to loud cheers of "Chuckie."

Schumer and Reid were upbeat about the Democrats' chances in Virginia, where Schumer said the northern and more Democrat-heavy counties have yet to be tallied. Reid added that the "House is looking tremendous" but cautioned that "no one here should have any illusions that it's over."

In the main ballroom, Democratic supporters are waiting in line to buy Killian's and Budweiser beers, and the only available wine seems to be a cabernet sauvignon circa 2004 – and the wine may be the only thing here reminiscent of that date.
