Catching the 'Falloff' Voters

Posted at 6:29 PM ET by Dan Gilgoff

Want a real-time view of how well the left is faring in its drive to catch up the GOP's legendary get-out-the-vote effort? Go to www.moveon.org and watch the running ticker tracking the number of phone calls that MoveOn members have made to Democratic falloff voters–those who cast ballots in presidential elections but stay home in midterms–so far this cycle. The count at 6:03 p.m.: 6,522,321 and counting. MoveOn.org Executive Director Eli Pariser tells us that the 130,000-strong army of MoveOn callers has dialed 550,000 homes just since this morning–and predicts that it will dial a quarter million more by the time the last polls close on the West Coast at 9 p.m. Pacific time. MoveOn's major strategy shift since 2004? "We're inserting Iraq into every conversation," Pariser tells us. "In 2004, it was more about Bush."

The staff of U.S. News & World Report are live in Washington watching the results roll in. U.S. News photographers are also dispatched around the nation, filing photos live to our photo gallery.

Our hour-by-hour guide to tonight's key races will help you find the bellwethers throughout the nation.
