Barone: GOP Turnout Push in Indiana May Misfire

Posted at 8:53 PM ET by Ryan Thornburg

Several analysts tonight are noting the boost in turnout, but U.S. News columnist Michael Barone just appeared on Fox News television and noted that in at least one race, the GOP turnout machine may not end up helping the Republican candidate. In Indiana's Ninth District, where CQPolitics.com reports that Republican Rep. Mike Sodrel is locked in a dead heat to retain his seat, Barone notes that while turnout in Dearborn County is up, Sodrel's percentage is down there. CNN.com has county-by-county results.

Barone rounded up his impression of a few other races as well.

He called the race in Indiana's Eighth District "a real collapse on the part of John Hostettler."

In Indiana's Second District, Barone says it is "too soon to say that race is over," although GOP Rep. Chris Chocola is trailing.

The Seventh District in Indiana is also a race to watch, Barone said. Although something of an upset could develop in the race between Democratic Rep. Julia Carson and Republican challenger Eric Dickerson, he said he didn't expect one.

The staff of U.S. News & World Report are live in Washington watching the results roll in. Silla Brush is at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee headquarters and Will Sullivan is reporting from the Republican National Congressional Committee headquarters. Ken Walsh and Dan Gilgoff are in the U.S. News offices, while Michael Barone is live nationally on Fox television and Gloria Borger is live on CBS.

U.S. News photographers are also dispatched around the nation, filing photos live to our photo gallery.

Our hour-by-hour guide to tonight's key races will help you find the bellwethers throughout the nation.
