The state has long been among the most liberal in the country. Roman Catholics make up the majority of voters, but in Rhode Island most Catholics are pro-choice and vote Democrat. Al Gore won 61 percent of the vote in 2000, compared with just 32 percent for President Bush. Sen. John Kerry received 59 percent, compared with Bush's 39 percent, in 2004. Despite the state's strong liberal bent, the last two governors have been Republicans. But only the Chafee family has established any lasting Republican dynasty. Between Lincoln and his father, John, a Chafee has occupied the Senate seat since 1976. And come fall, name recognition may mean the edge.
