Expect a clash of the female titans in the race for New Mexico's First District. Patricia Madrid, New Mexico's Democratic attorney general and the first woman ever elected to the state's district court bench, is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Heather Wilson, the lone female veteran in Congress. Already both have proved adept in fundraising, with the Federal Election Commission reporting that Madrid raised $1.1 million between October 2005 and May of this year, while Wilson, who is in her fifth term, pulled in close to $2 million. Early on, energy issues and Medicare have dominated the race, with Madrid trying to paint Wilson as a rubber-stamp vote for policies endorsed by President Bush. Expect Republicans to focus on corruption in the state treasurer's office that they say reflects badly on Madrid.
