Campaign Diary: MISSOURI

June 17, 2006

Demographics

The Show-Me State has long been considered crucial swing territory, although it voted for President Bush in 2004 by a 7-point margin. Expect both candidates to focus on the state's rural voters: Talent lost his home county in St. Louis in the 2000 governor's race and in his 2002 Senate election, but he won the Senate seat largely because of rural support. McCaskill, a native of rural Rolla, Mo., kicked her campaign off there.
