Hyde's long tenure notwithstanding, the district's politics have changed dramatically in recent decades, from rock-ribbed Republican to much more moderate, particularly on cultural issues. In 1988, George H. W. Bush took DuPage County, which encompasses most of Illinois 6, with 68 percent of the vote. In 2004, George W. Bush won with just 54 percent. An infusion of Asians and Hispanics from Chicago has also turned the district a lighter shade of red.
