Illinois Eighth District encompasses Chicago's northwest suburbs, an affluent, predominantly white-collar swath of corporate headquarters and subdivisions. In the past, the area has been described as one of the most Republican places in the nation. Though it no longer retains that title, 56 percent of voters in 2004 chose Bush over Kerry, the same percentage that helped put Bush in office in 2000. Bean first challenged Crane in 2002, and in losing she captured 43 percent of the vote. The question is whether she'll be able to repeat the 52 percent she got in 2004.
