Campaign Diary: ARIZONA

June 17, 2006

Overview

In this slice of southern Arizona, the election to fill moderate Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe's seat after he steps down this year still looks like a free-for-all. Among the colorful cast of characters vying for the Republican nomination in the September 12 primary: moderate Republican Steve Huffman, who is endorsed by Kolbe; conservative Randy Graf; and former state Republican Party Chairman Mike Hellon. National Democrats are betting on former State Sen. Gabrielle Giffords, who ran a small business, El Campo Tire, in Tucson for many years. Patty Weiss, Tucson's first female news personality, is also a possible Democratic nod.
