In a stunning turn of events, it appears that less than two weeks after embracing him wholeheartedly in Washington, D.C., and cutting him a $10,000 check, the National Republican Congressional Committee has decided to cut short a planned advertising blitz for immigration hard-liner Republican Randy Graf.
In a move that appears to be a thumb in the eye of the Republican establishment, voters in the Tucson area chose Randy Grafa former state legislator and golf pro and a founding member of the Minutemen civilian border patrol groupover four opponents in Tuesdays primary for Arizona House District Eight. Grafs win came despite a last-minute decision by the National Republican Campaign Committee to buy at least $122,000 of ads supporting moderate state Rep. Steve Huffman.
Roughly a week after the National Republican Congressional Committee announced that it would be running more than $122,000 worth of ads supporting moderate Republican candidate Steve Huffman, who's locked in a competitive primary race in Arizona District 8, the Democratic Congressional Committee has also leapt into the advertising fray with an ad lambasting Huffman's eight-year record in the State Legislature.
Arizona state Rep. Steve Huffman trails conservative Randy Graf in almost every poll in the Republican primary to replace moderate Rep. Jim Kolbe, but national Republicans don't seem too chary: They've thrown their support to Huffman.
A poll released this week by the Tucson Weekly shows former Democratic state Sen. Gabrielle Giffords and Republican immigration hawk Randy Graf leading in their respective primary races in Arizona. The winners on September 12 will then squareoff for the seat vacated by retiring moderate Republican Jim Kolbe.
