GOP Scans, But Doesn't Screen, Convention Speeches
The Bush-Cheney campaign is getting a preview read of all convention speeches but isn't demanding any major changes, according to officials. "There is very little 'You need to do this,'" said strategist Matthew Dowd. "They understand the thematic and they say it in their own words," he added of the convention speakers.
Reporters have tried to make an issue out of reports that the GOP and campaign committee is writing the speeches for the speakers, but the campaign is rejecting that charge. Officials today said, for example, that there would have been no way to tell Rudy Giuliani or Sen. John McCain what to say. Instead, the campaign tries to lay out nightly themes and get the speakers to address those. The campaign and GOP has brought in a stable of speechwriters to help the speakers but officials said that it's mostly word not theme craft. Paul Bedard, U.S. News
