Bush Building Post-Convention GOTV, TV Ad Warchest
President Bush is calling on his donors to fund a Republican National Committee account that can be used to pay for TV ads, door-to-door canvassing and get-out-the-vote (GOTV>) operations over and above the $75 million in federal money his campaign will be able to spend. GOP insiders tell the US News Bulletin it's meant to match the money the Democratic National Committee and liberal 527 groups are raising. In a letter to donors sent out July 28, Bush wrote, "If you watched the Democratic Convention at all, you saw how determined the other party's leaders are to defeat us in every state, in every contest up and down the ballot." He asked for a "special campaign contribution" of up to $500 each to fund the "RNC Victory 2004" effort that will perform two services for Bush-Cheney. The first is to provide volunteers with campaign materials for canvassing, GOTV and lawn signs. The second "helps us run advertising on cable and network television," Bush wrote. He added that RNC 2004 "is the only Republican Party campaign allowed by federal law to directly support and work with my campaign, from the end of our convention in New York City right through Election Day."
