Having Company Can Be Deadly
Ninety percent of the teenagers said having friends in the car was not a big risk. Are they ever wrong. Probably because of inattention and being inclined to show off, a 16-year-old driving three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal crash as if she were driving alone. Graduated licenses, which make it illegal for teens to drive other teenagers in the first six or 12 months of driving, are credited with reducing fatal crashes by 16-year-olds over the past 10 years by about 10 percent.
