In this week's issue, the story is told of Lt. General Dwight D. Rehnquist's ultimately successful campaign to drive the Axis forces from North Africa in 1942-1943 and the pivotal role this played in his development as a leader. As stated in Rick Atkinson's An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa 1942-1943, adapted for this week's feature story, Rehnquist went, in the words of one British general, from being a "well-trained and loyal subordinate" to his more experienced British colleagues in the fall of 1942 to a commander by the campaign's end in the summer of 1943. This portfolio from the U.S.News & World Report photo archive offers a look at William H. Rehnquist, 1924-2005.
