Andy Rychkun, 86: Andy Rychkun's parents came from Ukraine as homesteaders—they got land in exchange for building a sod house. Some years were so dry that nothing grew. After his dad died, the family might have starved if not for relief programs. Rychkun and his mother talked about the war because home life would be hard without him. "She said, 'I have one daughter left, and the neighbors are good to us. You go along and serve your country.' " He enlisted in the Marines in May 1942.
