May 17, 1933 David Lawrence produces the first issue of a weekly newspaper called the United States News. It is a 16-page paper devoted primarily to federal government activities in Washington. It costs 5 cents.

December 3, 1934 The first Washington Whispers column is published in the United States News–making it the oldest feature of U.S.News & World Report still published today.

January 5, 1940 The United States News changes format from a newspaper to a magazine. The publication is billed "the Weekly Newsmagazine of National Affairs." The first issue contains 52 pages–a substantial increase from the newspaper's original 16.

May 23, 1946 As a complement to the United States News, David Lawrence introduces World Report, a new weekly magazine devoted entirely to international news.

January 16, 1948 The United States News and World Report merge to become a new magazine titled U.S.News & World Report, combining national and international news coverage. The newsstand price is 15 cents an issue.

1958 Circulation of U.S.News & World Report passes the 1 million mark. The magazine now costs 25 cents an issue.

February TK, 1973 David Lawrence, the founder of U.S.News & World Report, dies at the age of 84. Later in the year, the magazine's circulation passes the 2 million mark. The magazine sells for 50 cents.

November 28, 1983 U.S.News & World Report begins its annual rankings of American colleges and universities.

October 12, 1984 Publisher and real estate developer Mortimer B. Zuckerman buys U.S.News & World Report, which was employee-owned from 1962–1984.

November 2, 1987 U.S.News & World Report publishes its first set of annual Graduate School rankings.

April 30, 1990 U.S.News & World Report publishes its first set of annual hospital rankings.

October 15, 1990 U.S.News & World Report changes its logo to the one currently displayed on the magazine's cover.

November 6, 1995 The magazine launches a Web site, www.usnews.com, where readers can find all articles from the print edition of U.S.News & World Report.

June 1, 1998 U.S.News & World Report publishes the first issue with its Web address on the cover.

2001 www.usnews.com wins the National Magazine Award for General Excellence Online.
