President Bill Clinton explores the Great Wall of China on June 6, 1998. The July 13, 1998, issue of U.S. News & World Report wrote of Clinton's nine-day trip to China. "Hundreds of millions of people on both sides of the globe noticed the made-for-TV moments, like the stroll atop the Great Wall, the tour of the Forbidden City, and the highest-level debate over freedom. But it was the private contact between the president of the United States and the president of China that may play the biggest role in shaping future ties between the lone superpower and the world's most populous country. U.S. officials, in fact, see a reasonable likelihood that Bill Clinton's warming relationship with Jiang Zemin will generate progress on a variety of issues, including nuclear nonproliferation, relations between the Koreas, and maybe even human rights within China itself."
