O.J. Simpson gets in his car at the Santa Monica Courthouse after the jury in his civil trial found him liable on all counts in the wrongful deaths of Ronald Goldman and Nicole Simpson. At his criminal trial, the former football star was found not guilty, and the nation, transfixed by the proceedings, found itself divided along racial lines over the outcome. The Oct. 16, 1995, issue of U.S.News & World Report wrote, "Now, the verdict is the obsession. It marks not only a new chapter for O.J. Simpson, whose battle for his freedom now becomes a battle for his lifestyle, but for the country, which must learn both to live without the Simpson trial and to live with its outcome."
