On July 2, 1985, one of the hostages of the hijacked TWA flight 847 hugs a loved one after his arrival home at Andrews Air Force Base. After the hostages' release, there was much debate on how President Reagan should proceed. The July 8, 1985, issue of U.S. News examined this issue. "Reagan was getting conflicting advice. Some officials felt retaliation would cause more problems than it would solve, especially if it resulted in killing innocent civilians. But others pressed for an attack, arguing that Washington cannot afford to appear to be a weak power lacking the backbone to respond against a terrorist outrage in which a U.S. serviceman was murdered."
