The body of a U.S. marine returned from Lebanon, on Aug. 31, 1983. On Aug. 29, 1983, marines came under mortar, rocket, and small-arms fire, resulting in two deaths and 14 injuries. This happened just days after a Mercedes-Benz truck barreled across a parking lot that separated the Beirut airport terminal from the temporary U.S. Marine headquarters, heading toward the building where some 300 marines lay sleeping. The driver smashed the truck into the lobby of the headquarters, where he detonated some 12,000 pounds of TNT.
