A West Berliner ignores the blast from an East German water cannon as he hammers away part of the wall. The destruction of the Berlin Wall is considered to be the beginning of the end of communism. Within the next few years, countries surrounding the Soviet Union cast communism aside, and in 1991 the Soviet Union broke up, ending the Cold War.
