Republican Sen. John McCain stands in front of the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial on March 11, 1983. McCain was held as a POW in Hanoi for five and a half years after his plane was shot down. The memorial was built in the Constitution Gardens in Washington, D.C., through private donations from the public and was dedicated in November 1982.
