From April 15, 1989, to mid-June, students from across China gathered in Beijing in peaceful protest with the hope of new freedoms and a democratic government. However, the communist government, not wanting to lose control of its country, responded with physical force to end to the protests. The students stood their ground, attempting to divert the Chinese Army. However, on June 3 in Tiananmen Square, soldiers attacked the students killing an estimated 2,600 and injuring 60,000.
