The face of a trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange reflects concern on Oct. 22, 1987, just days after the legendary Black Monday when the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by almost one third. In the Oct. 26, 1987 issue, U.S. News spoke of Black Monday: "Although a technical rebound from such a severe drubbing is probably in the cards, the market's panicky retreat has eliminated tens of billions of dollars from portfolios and sent confidence into a tailspin. It will be hard to reverse quickly and could contribute to a weakening of economic fundamentals."
