Oliver North, in uniform, is besieged by the media and the glare of the spotlight as he drives near his home on Feb. 26, 1987. North was convicted for his participation in what was known as the "Iran-Contra Affair." North, who worked for the National Security Council, provided testimony implicating several top officials in the Reagan administration's involvement in the illegal sale of arms to Iran and the diversion of profits to the Contras in Nicaragua. Through his televised testimony, North became to many an American hero. The July 20, 1987, issue of U.S. News quotes Illinois Democratic Rep. Henry Hyde as saying, "He came in here as the hunted… and he has turned into the impresario."
