Seoul students clash with police in protest against the university shutdown during the 1986 Asian games. Student protests against the government, and an airport bomb the day before the start of the 1986 Asian games, created large obstacles for South Korea, which planned to host the 1988 Olympics. From the Sept. 29, 1986, issue of U.S. News, "Equally important, the bloody attack dramatized the obstacles to stability that [President] Chun's government must overcome to meet another 1988 target: The first-ever-peaceful transition of power in the Republic of Korea."
