Philippine rebel leader, Bernabe Buscayano, is seen behind a locked door. Philippine President Corazon Aquino freed this rebel leader as a campaign promise to human-rights advocates. Aquino came to power after an uprising of the Filipino people, evicting Ferdinand Marcos from power. She used her presidency as a chance to mend the ailing economy, root out government corruption, and win the trust of supporters of her predecessor. On March 17, 1986, just weeks after the start of Aquino's presidency, U.S. News reported: "For now, there is no question that the immensely popular Aquino has a national mandate to govern. But the pressures already developing leave no doubt that the future of the Philippines will be decided in the trenches of one of the toughest political battlefields in the world."
