Bruce Laingen at his homecoming in Bethesda, Md., on Jan. 28, 1981. Laingen served as chargé d'affaires of the American Embassy in Iran prior to being held hostage from Nov. 4,1979, to Jan. 20,1981, in what became known as the Iran hostage crisis. Return of the hostages rallied American patriotism, brought harsh criticism of how the situation was handled by the Carter administration, and elicited strong opinions about how the new Reagan administration should go forward. "So appalling were disclosures of the hostages' treatment that many citizens called on President Reagan to repudiate the bargain that set the prisoners free-and to find some way to punish Iran." U.S.News & World Report, Feb. 2, 1981.
