October 20, 1973, the "Saturday Night Massacre." President Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Special Prosecutor Cox (above). Richardson refused and resigned in protest. Nixon then ordered Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox. He was fired when he refused. Finally, the acting attorney general, Robert Bork, fired Cox.
