President Nixon and his wife, Patricia, stand on the Great Wall during their historic trip to China in 1972. Nixon was the first U.S. president to visit the country. According to the Feb. 28, 1972, issue of U.S.News & World Report, "Publicly, the President's specific aims were both modest and cautious. As he left Washington on February 17, Mr. Nixon said that 'what we must do is to find a way to see that we can have differences without being enemies in war.' "
