Pope John Paul II waves to a crowd on Oct. 4, 1979, while visiting the United States. The Oct. 8, 1979, issue of U.S.News & World Report says that "In his first tour of the U.S. as pope, John Paul faces new tests of his talents. In no other nation visited this year are Catholics only a minority and religious diversity the norm. In the weeks before his departure, he was warned that U.S. Catholicism is in 'spiritual disarray,' plagued by dissent and a variety of challenges to papal edicts."
