"In AsiaIt's Ike 'By a Landslide,' " a headline appearing in the Dec. 21, 1959, issue of U.S.News & World Report, captured the unexpectedly warm welcome Eisenhower received as the first American chief executive to visit Asia. During his stay in New Delhi, throngs of nearly 2 million people turned out to catch a glimpse of him, surprising even the Indian leaders themselves. Upon his return to the United States, Eisenhower spoke of the crowds who gathered at the stops along his trip through Europe, Africa, and Asia, saying, ". . . I saw at close hand the faces of millions."
