1959: Children in Kabul pose for Martin. Martin notes, "Afghanistan has 869 schools and 155,000 students. This is a remarkable increase from the 37 schools and their 4,591 students of 25 years ago. But 90 percent of Afghanistan's boys are still illiterate. Kabul University, the only one in the country, has turned out only 1152 graduates–74 of them women–in the past 20 years.
