Wendy McElroy wrote a July 4 column strongly recommending The Dangerous Book for Boys, a surprise bestseller in Britain and Australia that encourages adventure, discovery, and risk taking. Then the book was removed from Amazon's catalog amid suspicions that a book based frankly on the idea that boys are different from girls might have run afoul of America's gender police.
Probably not, though. Amazon had apparently been selling a limited number of copies printed in the United Kingdom. Janet Evans of HarperCollins said, "Amazon must have had a temporary order: It's not due to be published in the U.S. until May of '07. So it's not surprising that they don't have it."
No, the surprise is that the American publisher is willing to wait another year to put out a book that is making a lot of money abroad.
