THE DAY'S EVENTS

  • President Bush visits New York City to view the devastation from Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

  • President Bush gives the military authorization to call up to 50,000 reservists to active duty.

  • House and Senate lawmakers pass a $40 billion emergency spending bill to aid the victims of the terrorist attacks and to fight terrorism. The Senate vote was 96-0. The House vote was 422-0.

  • U.S. leaders including President Bush and former presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter, and Ford participate in a prayer service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

  • The FBI releases the names of 19 men who authorities believe hijacked the four airplanes involved in Tuesday's terrorist attacks.

  • The Senate passes a resolution authorizing the president to use force to retaliate against the terrorist attacks. The vote was 98-0.

  • New York rescue workers face the added difficulty of rain in their efforts to find survivors in the World Trade Center rubble.

  • Searchers find the flight data recorder and flight voice recorder from American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon Tuesday.

  • President Bush is expected to visit New York City today. He has declared today a national day of remembrance for the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks.

LOSSES

  • New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani says 4,763 people are on a "missing list" in New York City. That number includes those on the two airliners that crashed into the World Trade Center towers, rescue workers, and those reported missing by family members.

  • Pentagon officials say 190 people died in the Pentagon crash, including the 64 passengers and crew members on the hijacked plane.

  • All 45 people aboard United Flight 93 died when the hijacked airliner crashed in rural Pennsylvania.
