THE DAY'S EVENTS

  • During a visit to New York, President Bush met with a group of business leaders and said he wants Congress to pass a new economic stimulus package of between $60 billion and $75 billion.

  • Stocks closed higher today after Bush announced his aggressive economic stimulus plan. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 173 points and the Nasdaq had jumped 88 points.

  • Greyhound resumed bus service at 1 p.m. EDT after halting service nationwide when a passenger attacked the driver of one of its buses. The attack caused a crash that killed at least six passengers and injured some 32 others.

  • Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld left for the Middle East last night to meet with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, and Uzbekistan. Before leaving, Rumsfeld ordered the deployment of U.S. troops to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

  • The Taliban's leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar, delivered a radio address Tuesday night in which he said that any Afghans supporting an opposition government would be considered traitors and could face the death penalty.

  • Defense Department and FBI officials said they have called off efforts to recover remains from the crash site at the Pentagon. Of the 189 victims of the September 11 attack, 119 have been recovered and 94 have been positively identified. None has been recovered from the site in nine days.

LOSSES

  • New York City officials said 5,219 people are missing at the World Trade Center; 363 are confirmed dead.

  • The Pentagon death toll remains at 189 people. The Pennsylvania crash killed 44.
