In 1997, Israeli Air Force pilot, Col. Ilan Ramon was selected by NASA to serve as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Columbia. Colonel Ramon was the first Israeli to serve on a NASA spaceflight. After the successful launch of Columbia, mission control radioed up, "A big welcome to Ilan as you join the international community of human spaceflight."
