It's odds and ends on the Bad Guys blog today: a meth lab locator, Iraq sex trafficking , and al Qaeda hunts Israelis in India. Here's the latest:
National Meth Lab Registry. Finally, here's a handy guide to your neighborhood meth lab, courtesy of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Just click on your state and out pops addresses of local meth labs. Along with frazzling users' nervous systems, methamphetamine has another mean side effect: the makeshift labs where it's made are notoriously toxic places, full of noxious chemicals and fire hazards. Worse, the smelly labs appear to be spreading from rural areas into cities "from Mid-America to Midtown," as DEA chief Karen Tandy recently put it. Late last month, the feds announced they'd busted a group tied to nine meth labs in New York City and Long Island, based out of a penthouse overlooking the U.N., a Manhattan auto dealership, and a pickup truck, among other places.
Iraq Sex Trafficking. Add sex trafficking to the long list of ills befalling Iraq. One of the less-noticed tragedies of the war is the apparent surge in trafficking of women and girls, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Those fleeing the violence have ended up being forced into the sex trade in such neighboring countries as the United Arab Emirates, Syria, and Yemen. The State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report, released in June, offers some details, but analysts suspect the problem is growing much worse.
Al Qaeda Targets India and Israel. Is al Qaeda going after targets in India? Israeli counterterrorism officials are warning their citizens to be wary of holiday travel to Goa, a popular vacation spot on India's southwest coast. Al Qaeda and its allies have already struck at Israeli tourists in Egypt and Kenya, so it's not a stretch to think they'd hit soft targets in Goa, long a favored destination for the backpack and beach-party crowd. Al Qaeda could strike at India several ways, including through Kashmir-focused jihadist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, blamed for a 2001 attack on India's parliament and more recent bombings in Delhi and Bangalore. Or bin Laden's operatives might use their favorite godfather, Dawood Ibrahim, the alleged mastermind of the 1993 bombings of Bombay that killed 257. Ibrahim, India's most wanted man, is holed up in Pakistan and being hunted by both Washington and Delhi. (For more on Dawood, check out "Paying for Terror," our December 2005 cover story on the growing use of organized crime by terrorists.)
