Romney Advisers Point to Big Fundraising Haul
Advisers to Mitt Romney are disappointed that he isn't getting more media attention for his big fundraising success this week.
The former Massachusetts governor reported raising $21 million, topping everyone in the Republican presidential raceand close to Hillary Rodham Clinton's $26 million and Barack Obama's $25 million on the Democratic side. But the mainstream media gave much more attention to the Democrats.
"Our numbers were really underreported," a Romney adviser told U.S. News. And Romney's success was all the more striking because he hadn't run for president before, didn't have widespread name identification, and lagged in the national opinion polls. "We had none of that, and we outperformed both Rudy [Giuliani] and John McCain.... Mitt connects with people. In the end, people come into a room with Mitt, and they walk away writing checks."
Details of how Romney achieved such a stunning total won't be known until the details of his fundraising are released later this month. Critics say he can't keep up the pace.
But the Romney adviser says, "You'll find it's not a shallow network, and it will get bigger." He adds: "Give us the positive press that Obama has been getting in the last two months, and we'd have raised $50 million."
