Obama Downplays Clinton Poll Lead

By Paul Bedard
Posted 2/22/07

Trailing Sen. Hillary Clinton by double digits in virtually every poll isn't causing any angst inside Sen. Barack Obama's campaign–yet, according to team members.

"It's very early, and we know that so we don't think much about it," said an aide. "We feel very good about where we are. At this point in 2003, Sen. Joe Lieberman was winning."

Obama's team explains that while the former first lady has lined up a significant staff of political strategists, press aides, and fundraisers, the Obama bid is so new that his team is still hiring.

"We're just now starting to put together our team," said another insider. What's more, said an Obama strategist, the candidate is still a very new face to voters despite the "Obamamania" over him in the press.

"Give us a little time before you start hitting our poll numbers," said the Washington Obama strategist.
