Ten Facts About Mike McConnell

1. John M. "Mike" McConnell was born July 26, 1943, in Greenville, S.C.

2. He married Mary Theresa Wagner on Jan. 29, 1988. He has two daughters from a previous marriage.

3. McConnell has attended Furman University (B.A., economics, 1966), George Washington University (M.P.A., government and public administration, 1986), the National Defense University (M.A., 1986), Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and the Defense Intelligence College (Ph.D., 1992).

4. He was commissioned as a Navy officer in 1967 and served tours in Vietnam, Japan, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean.

5. A recipient of three Bronze Stars and numerous other military honors, McConnell was also given the top award for service in the nation's intelligence community.

6. He served as an intelligence officer under Colin Powell from 1990 to 1992 during Operation Desert Storm.

7. McConnell directed the National Security Agency from 1992 to 1996 under President Bill Clinton.

8. He retired from 29 years of government service as a vice admiral on March 1, 1996, and went to work on information security issues for Booz Allen Hamilton, a government contractor in McLean, Va.

9. He was named one of the "Top 25 Most Influential Consultants 2002" by Consulting magazine.

10. In recent years, he has served as a senior vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton, where, according to his bio, he "leads the firm's assignments in Military Intelligence and Information Operations for the Department of Defense, the Unified Combatant Commanders, Military Services, and Defense Agencies."
