1. Murphy was born in Hempstead, N.Y., in 1963.

2. Her parents were public school educators.

3. She graduated from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges magna cum laude in 1984. Three years later she finished Harvard Law School cum laude.

4. She clerked for a judge of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals before joining the U.S. Justice Department.

5. She worked at a private law firm in Pennsylvania and was also the associate legal counsel for NARAL Pro-Choice America, a reproductive-rights group.

6. She was once an adjunct professor at Temple University law school.

7. If elected, she has promised to reject a congressional pay raise until the federal minimum wage is also raised.

8. She is married and has two daughters, Emily and Lily.

9. On the wall of her office is a NARAL poster from a 1990 Senate race.

10. She works on a blue Dell laptop computer in her office.

11. In her Pennsylvania garden, she grows peas, tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce.

12. Radio preset buttons in her car are tuned to Y100 FM (WPLY) and 102.9 FM (WMGK), a classic rock station that is one of her daughter's favorites.
