1. He was born on November 1952 and raised in Mansfield, Ohio.
2. His father was a small-town doctor who made house calls; his mother was an early supporter of the civil rights movement.
3 Brown was an Eagle Scout and in high school, he was elected president of the student council.
4. In 1974, he graduated with a Russian studies degree from Yale University and was elected to the Ohio statehouse at age 22. He later earned master's degrees from Ohio State University in education and public administration.
5. Brown served in the Ohio State House of Representatives for four terms before his two terms as Ohio's secretary of state.
6. His wife, Connie Schultz, is a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. The couple have one son and three daughters.
7. In 1994, Brown wrote Myths of Free Trade. He also wrote Congress From the Inside: Observations From the Majority and the Minority, currently in its third edition.
8. Brown gave his favorite baseball card to powerful California Democrat Rep. Vic Fazio with a note to encourage the congressman to elect him to a seat on the energy and commerce committee. He is now the top-ranking Democrat on its health subcommittee.
9. Brown has sponsored bus trips to Canada so consumers could buy prescription drugs for less than U.S. prices.
